The COVID pandemic absolutely devastated humans across the world and obviously a lot of businesses. A lot of businesses, restaurants and small businesses had to shut down simply because there wasn’t enough business to justify staying open and they couldn’t meet their overhead expenses and couldn’t pay their employees. And it’s really a devastating thing to have witnessed driving down the street at your favorite restaurant and seeing that it’s closed and just reading about all the devastation. At our law firm, we’re fortunate. I have really valued my employees more than just employees, they’re partners in a profession where we get to make a difference. We’ve been fortunate enough to do very well and for me it wasn’t an option to let anyone go. It wasn’t an option to cut anyone’s salary.
It wasn’t an option to start keeping track of hours. I actually told everyone at my firm, “No one is going to lose their job,” and no one lost their job. I told them, “I don’t care if you work full-time, part-time because of the pandemic or because of limitations in terms of the pandemic,” I’m going to pay you full-time. Why? Because for me, it’s important to just take care of the people that you love, that you work with, that really are part of your family. Treat them like your family because they are your family. And so for us, we really there was no change in terms of how we treated staff and employees and I think that that generated a lot of goodwill and alleviated a lot of fear that a lot of people had that, “Oh, is the shut down of business and is the reduction in cases going to cause him to fire me?” And the good answer was no we did not have to do that and we’re very blessed and fortunate that we were in that position.
