Arash Homampour:
It’s very important for referring attorneys to really understand how much they and their clients can gain by bringing in another firm. I frequently talk to attorneys who want me to take their case, and want me to perform magic or get some miraculous result, and I’m the first person to tell them, if I think that they can competently handle the case, get the best result for the client and not share the fee, I always encourage it because I’m not in the business of taking anybody’s money that I’m not entitled to.
But when there’s a case that is too expensive or too complicated, or the attorney knows or should know that they can get much more value for themselves and for the client by joint venturing that case with another law firm, or referring it out to another law firm, it’s really important for that attorney to know when to say when. Because at the end of the day, we all want to do the best for the client, we want to get the best result, and the attorney not only gets the benefit of a greater result for themselves, a better result for the client, they also get the opportunity to learn so that the next time they take on a large case or a case that maybe they’re not familiar with, they know how to do it, or at least know a little bit more about how to do it, so they can themselves get the better results.
